Awards season is in full gear right now, but it may not feel like it when one of the biggest televised awards ceremonies, The Golden Globes, did not air on our TVs last night. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is currently reforming their group after many scandals and accusations about the validity of some of their members, as well as making a push to be more diverse in their voting body. So they instead took to social media to announce this year’s big winners, and while it may have felt a bit anti-climactic, it’s still helping shape the awards conversation – and what we might see at The Oscars.
The big winners of the night were West Side Story and The Power of the Dog, which each won Best Picture in their respective categories (Comedy/Musical and Drama). West Side Story also took Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for newcomer Rachel Zegler, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose. Jane Campion won for Best Director, for The Power of the Dog, which also won Best Supporting Actor, for Kodi Smit-McPhee’s performance. Other films that won include King Richard, Tick, Tick… Boom!, Belfast, and Encanto.
