Nomadland was the big winner at the 93rd annual Academy Awards with three wins including Best Picture for its moving and intimate look at a woman who travels across the American West as a nomad.
“Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible and one day very, very soon take everyone you know into a theatre, shoulder to shoulder, in that dark space and watch every film that is represented here tonight,” said the film’s star Frances McDormand, after the film won the top prize.
McDormand also won the Best Actress award for her role as Fern, making it her third ever Oscar win.
In a historic year that marked the first time two women were nominated for Best Director, Chloé Zhao took home the honour earlier in the evening for the film. She also made history by becoming the first woman of colour to do so.
“This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and each other no matter how difficult it is to do that,” she said during her acceptance speech.
The first official Oscars ceremony during the COVID-19 pandemic featured a more informal affair at Los Angeles’ historic Union Station, with scenes from its usual home at The Dolby Theatre and other international locations via satellite.
With no official host, a series of presenters shared the duties, beginning with Regina King who kicked off the evening explaining how all the unmasked guests in the room had been vaccinated and tested.
Filmed like a movie and produced by Steven Soderbergh (along with long-time producer Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins), the show devoted less time to canned monologues and more time to telling the stories behind the films and the people who made them.
Daniel Kaluuya took home the first big award of the night winning Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah while Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Supporting Actress for Minari, making her the first Korean woman in Oscar history to win in that category.
Anthony Hopkins also made history with a win for The Father, making him the oldest person to win a Best Actor award.
