Grounded isn’t usually a word used to describe movies about outer space, but Lucy in the Sky takes an extremely personal, human approach to space travel. The film follows Lucy, an astronaut who has trouble adjusting to her seemingly menial life back on Earth after a perspective-altering mission that forces her to question everything she knew before experiencing outer space.

We caught up with the cast and crew, including Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, director Noah Hawley and writers Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi at the TIFF premiere last month.

To learn more about the filmmaker’s fascinating vision and impressive directorial debut, watch our interview with Noah Hawley, and see Lucy in the Sky at Cineplex theatres on October 3.

Lucy in the Sky makes the experience of space travel relatable.

Sci-fi movies usually aren’t relatable—they’re an other-worldly escape. But Lucy in the Sky humanizes this grand concept and takes a metaphorical look at how people cope with pivotal experiences. Any life-changing events you have endured can be examined through the lens of Lucy, whose singular journey isolates her and gives her an earth-shattering new perspective.
