Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, and the cast of Moonlight talk their beautiful coming of age drama
One year ago today, Moonlight won Best Picture at the Oscars.
It was the first film with an all black cast to win Best Picture, as well as the lowest budget film to ever win. In an unforgettable moment at last years Academy Awards, La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner for the night's biggest award, only to have it be amended in a chaotic moment that the ceremony has never seen before, and will likely never see again.
Moonlight tells the story of Chiron, through three chapters, one focused on him as a child, the next as a teenager, and the last as an adult. The film hones in on his identity struggle, exploring his sexuality, and choosing who he wants to be, centering on African-American, gay male identity, something we rarely seen depicted on-screen, while still telling a universal story.
In honour of the one-year anniversary of Moonlight's big, historic win, we're looking back at our interview with the cast, including Spectre's Naomie Harris, "Luke Cage"'s Mahershala Ali, Andre Holland, and the three men who play Chiron, Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes, as well as the director Barry Jenkins.
