In Pain and Glory, Banderas plays a role inspired by the life of his Almodóvar himself, and it’s a performance unlike anything we’ve seen from the Spanish actor before. He won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his turn as Salvador Mallo, an artist at the end of his career, who is preoccupied by his pains while reflecting on his successes.
We may see Banderas’ name pop up at Oscar time, and a nomination would be well deserved. We spoke to him when he brought the film to the Toronto International Film Festival. Watch the interview and see Pain and Glory in select Cineplex theatres on October 18.
Pain and Glory is a beautiful character study.
A near-masterpiece from Spain’s most prolific living director, Pain and Glory is a wonderful mediation on life. With brilliant performances, good humour and a lot of heart, this is a film anyone can enjoy, and a likely contender for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.
